Introduction
The English language and literature major offers a wide range of courses based on the study of humanities. The objective of the Department of English Language and Literature is to foster expertise in English through international grounding and systemized knowledge.
The objective for students majoring in English language and literature is to become leaders on an international scale. English language and literature majors are encouraged in the development of both their linguistic ability and cultural awareness. Students receive a humanities-based education that prepares them to enter a competitive job market in which the knowledge of international English is fundamental.
Students obtain knowledge in their major based on the latest theories of syntax, phonetics and English pedagogics. Students can also major in a second foreign language such as Chinese or Japanese. Further employment opportunities are available by double majoring in commerce or business related fields.
Utilizing a methodic review of theories, exercises and thorough literary education, the Department of English Language and Literature fosters experts in the English language who become the thriving centerpiece of globalization.
Job Fields
A major in English language and literature prepares students for diverse careers in media, trade, interpretation, translation, writing, publishing, copywriting, as well as broadcast or written journalism. Graduates of the program are also qualified to work in international companies and government positions, e.g. as embassy staff, overseas PR officers, and foreign affairs employees. Certification is available for those seeking opportunities as middle and high school teachers.

- This course is aimed at improving students' ability to read and understand various English articles written by native speakers of English. In order to accomplish this goal, students will (1) read English passages from various cultural backgrounds and genres, (2) learn English vocabularies and expressions, and (3) improve their comprehension ability in terms of cultures and contexts. This will help students deepen their understanding of human cultures and lives as well as their knowledge of English.
1- 1 - SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH
- The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.
1- 1 - UNIVERSITY LIFE AND MAJOR DESIGN
- 1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.
1- 1 - THE INTRODUCTION OF ENGLISH AND AMERICAN POETRY
- This course aims to make students attain a liberal refined education and feel delight in reading English poems, by introducing typical lyric poems of major poets.
1- 1 - UNDERSTANDING OF ENGLISH LINGUISTICS
- Understaning of English Linguistics is a course designed to introduce students to linguistic features of the English language. In this course, we will cover general linguistic fields in English such as English phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and historical linguistics. Throughout the class, students are expected to understand general properties of the English language.
1- 2 - BRITISH AND AMERICAN CULTURES AND SOCIETIES
- This course is an overview of British and American cultures, which will help understand the constitution of the societies and the usage of the English language. Historical developments are also examined that have contributed to the formation of contemporary British and American cultures.
1- 2 - CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
- The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."

- This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.
1- 2 - SOFTWARE AND AI
- Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.
1- 2 - INTRODUCTION TO BRITISH AND AMERICAN THEATRE
- In this course students are expected to gain a rather wide and concrete understanding about the essence of tragedy and comedy as well as the process in which they developed in the British and American history of drama.
1- 2 - UNDERSTANDING BRITISH AND AMERICAN NOVELS
- This course is an introduction to the novel as a literary genre. The British and American novelists are surveyed: major novels of the 19th and 20th centuries, along with their backgrounds, are briefly discussed. For some short stories, in particular, detailed reading in English is required in order to improve the English reading skill.

- English phonetics and phonology : Theory and practicum is a course designed to introduce students to the various facets of phonetic and phonological investigation of English. This course will cover the basics of English phonetics such as stress, place and manner of articulation as they are relevant to the realization of phonological regularity of English. The first part of the course will focus on theoretical backgrounds of articulatory phonetics and phonology and the latter part will work on the ability to pronounce English, correctly and smoothly.

- This course is about some basic (syntactic) principles that govern the English sentence structure or the English basic word order. - 1. Summary of the course This course is designed for third- and fourth-year undergraduate students to systematically explore career paths and establish employment strategies aligned with their academic majors. Students will develop an understanding of industry structures and job classifications related to their fields of study, set desired career goals, and create individualized career plans. Through activities such as job description analysis, guest lectures from alumni and industry professionals, and other practical exercises, students will strengthen their career competencies. The course aims to provide opportunities for self-directed career preparation. 2. Course Objectives The primary objective of this course is to help students articulate their career direction and establish customized job-seeking strategies based on their academic background and personal strengths. Students will be guided to accurately understand occupations and industries related to their majors and design career paths that reflect their capabilities. In addition, the course integrates university career support programs and co-curricular activities to enable students to prepare more effectively. 3- 1 - MODERN AMERICAN NOVEL
- This course aims to analyze the representative modern American novels dating from the early American period to the 19th century. The major writers to be discussed are Poe, Irving, Hawthorne, Melville, and Gilman. Some of the representative short stories will be discussed. Along with this, the nature of Romanticism and Realism will be explored.
3- 1 - ENGLISH COMPOSITION I
- The purpose of this course is to improve basic English writing skills by means of frequent writing practice on a variety of topics. Attention is paid to paragraph and essay structure, different writing modes, grammar and vocabulary.
3- 2 - CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
- This course is designed to help students in English Language and Literature prepare for diverse career paths after graduation. Students explore professional fields such as trade, international relations, tourism, airline service, finance, media, performing arts, translation and interpretation, and English education. The course provides practice in learning specialized vocabulary and expressions relevant to each field, as well as essential business English used in the workplace. - This course is designed to survey the representative works of the major poets from 17th-century to Romantic Period in the early 19th-century. An emphasis will be given to Metaphysical poets, John Milton, John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Romantic poets: William Blake, William Wordsworth, John Keats and so on.

- This course aims to improve students' English listening comprehension skills by listening to English speech with various accents.

- This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to write about a variety of controversial issues in the field of English education so that the students can enhance their writing competence, integrating critical, logical thinking, analytic ability, and reasoning powers. In order to help students cope adequately with the English essay writing task in the Exam for the License of Teachers, this course presents a variety of theories and skills in the field of TESOL, which ultimately helps them to enrich their background knowledge. It also provides them with an opportunity to practice expressing their opinions logically and systematically on the basis of logic. In addition, this course deals with the development of a topic statement, discourse cohesion and coherence, and rhetorical structure, etc. Teaching methods employed in this course focus on the presentation and discussion of argumentative essays. 4- 1 - PHONETIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH SPEECH
- Phonetic Analysis of English Speech is a course designed to introduce the methods for the acoustic analysis of English speech. Using speech analysis tools such as Praat that provides visual displays of both segmental and prosodic features of English, you will learn how to collect and analyze acoustic speech data and how to account for properties of the English segments and phonological variations.
4- 1 - PRACTICAL ENGLISH
- The purpose of the course is to help students improve reading skills and build English vocabulary in practical terms. It is intended for students who need to achieve a high score for the reading comprehension section. The course will teach students practical English vocabulary to improve their comprehension of various passages based on real-life experiences. It will also provide background knowledge through multi-media to improve students’ comprehension of academic reading passages. Students will check their learning through reading comprehension exercises.

- This course aims to help students improve their interview skills in English. It provides students with an opportunity to express their ideas and opinions about given interview questions so that students can enhance their speaking ability. It also provides students with an opportunity to learn from a good model interview and have individual and group interviews in real-life situations.
