QS-Chosun Ilbo Rankings Shows YU’s Jump of 15 Places for Last 3 Years Big Jump Shown in Research Quality Indicated by Academic Reputation, Paper Per Faculty, Citations Per Paper Noticeable at Internationalization Index by International Faculty, International Students Natural Science Area Enters Top 100 in Asia, Balanced Rising in Every Science Area [2015-6-11] Yeungnam University (President NOH, Seok-Kyun) in 2015 Asian University Rankings noticeably moved up 12 notches in ranking than the previous year. According to the 2015 QS-Chosun Ilbo Asian University Rankings announced at 10th June, Yeungnam University(hereinafter called ‘YU’) moved up steeply and ranked 135th in Asia in terms of overall indices, while almost all universities in Korea largely showed low-toned performance. YU has been steadily in uptrend for the last 3 years. It was reported YU moved up 15 notches for three years since 2013. Especially this year, the index of ‘academic reputation’ pushed up YU into 118th place (16th in Korea) in Asia, 23 steps up from the last year. There is also a rise in ranking of the ‘research quality’, which is scored by paper per faculty and citations per paper. In terms of the evaluation in academic area, YU’s natural science area particularly moved up into 90th in Asia, which indicates an outstanding research quality. Besides the high-class positioning (12th) in ranking of natural science quality among universities in Korea, YU are also in the upper ranks in research quality of other academic areas such as engineering & technology (12th), bioscience & medicine(16th), human science & arts(23th). . Such high performance comes from a strict criteria of faculty employment and promotion under the catch phrase of “To be the Best Professors’ University“ and at the same time from the special attention on research support system for best faculty. Since the time the president NOH took his office in 2013, YU has provided an exceptional support on the research through the ‘Research Equipment Support Project.’ This Project is the only one case being carried out by YU among universities in Korea, which selects best 25 professors out of top 30% professors in research performance every year and supports them with a total of 4 million dollars of research fund for four years. The selected professors are obliged to publish one or more papers on the top 30% SCI journals in their professional fields within one and half year after finishing the research projects. Otherwise, the professors are not allowed to apply for school-funding projects any more and have no right to have the beneficiary research years. In addition, YU has invited and funded foreign young scientists through post-doctoral program and foreign research faculty program since 2008 and 2010, respectively, in order to encourage an international cooperative research for future synergy effect. As a policy system for strengthening the research ability, YU plans to appoint an outstandingly excellent faculty in research performance as a chair professor, and specially promote an excellent faculty in such performance to a higher position. According to the President NOH, “A long-term ceaseless support of research fund, equipment and human resource is more important for cultivating excellent research ability than a short-term investment, and such system is necessary for the support. We will spare no cost and no support as it is for more and better world-class performance.” A highly remarkable rise is shown also in Internalization Index. The number of foreign professor ranked 66th in Asia (13th in Korea), and the out-bound exchange students ranked 36th in Asia (15th in Korea), which are maximum 10 notches up from the last year. This is due to a daring investment by employing doubled number of foreign faculty than the last year and providing YU students with overseas learning opportunities of international internship and student exchange program. As of June in 2015, YU is now vividly engaged in international exchange activities by making sisterhood relationships with 301 universities and institutions in 40 foreign countries.

Medical Research Center(MRC) Awarded to YU, a Front-Leading Research Center Support Project sponsored by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and National Research Foundation of Korea Smart-aging Convergence Research Center Sets Up To Cure Aging Disease, Create Anti-aging Health Business, Enhance Quality of Life [2015-6-10] Let’s Age Young and Smartly till Nighty Nine Yeungnam University(‘YU’) became to lead the Smart Aging National Project sponsored by big fund of the Government. The Front-leading Research Center Support Project in basic medical area, the Medical Research Center(MRC) was awarded to YU. It is a sponsored by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Research Foundation of Korea. The Front-leading Research Center Support Project was firstly kicked off in 1990 in order to explore and cultivate an excellent research organization possessed with world-level creativity and capability and hence solve scientific difficulties and social issues. It is divided into three research areas such as medicine(MRC), science(SRC) and engineering(ERC). YU plans to set up the Smart-Aging Convergence Research Center (directed by MD. Kim Jae-Ryong) and continue to carry out the project till Feb. of 2022. Industry-University-Government will invest a total of over $11 million of funds in this Project which are consist of $6.7 million from government budget, $2.8million from university, $0.7million from Daegu Metropolitan City, $0.7million from Gyongsangbukdo Province and $0.2million-equivalent investment in kind from participating companies. The Laboratory Animal Center situated at Daegu Gyeongbuk Medical Cluster Valley, Dong-A ST as a pharmaceutical company and A&RT as a drugs R&D company will join this Project. Under the slogan of “Let’s Age Young and Smartly till Nighty Nine”, the Smart Aging Center aims to concentrate its research capability on new diagnostic and curing methods of aging diseases using the control of blood-vessel aging. The aging population is now a world issue as mentioned by the world prospect which foresees aging population older than 65 will over 40% by 2060. According to BCC Research, a world-level technical market search company, anti-aging industry market in the world will grow up to $420 billion dollars by 2030. The domestic anti-aging market is forecast to reach around $28 billion dollars by 2020 (SERI, 2013). YU became to lead the Smart Ageing Project at this point of time and, therefore, is expected to create a significant added value in terms of national economic aspect. YU has operated from 2005 to Feb of last year the Research Center of Senile Blood Vessel Disease (Director M.D. Kim Jae-Ryong) sponsored by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Research Foundation of Korea. Such previous performance was recognized and an opportunity to lead this large scale national project was again awarded to YU. Particularly, YU has possessed lots of human resources as the faculty and researchers who are excellent in medical/pharmaceutical/clinical areas related with aging and aging-disease fields. The specific research results of aging mechanism and its control have been continuously published in the SCI-level journals to strengthen an international reputation and positioning. “We will hopefully put anti-aging drugs and new antibody medicines to practical use and commercialize them. And, the development of new diagnostic and curing methods of aging disease will give us an opportunity to create new business of anti-aging health industry. This will allow us to contribute to the growth of local pharmaceutical and bio industries and furthermore human health, life extension and quality of life”, said the director of the Smart Aging Convergence Research Center, YU’s faculty of college of medicine M.D. Kim Jae-Ryong. Meanwhile, a total number of 49 proposals were submitted to apply for the 2015 Front-leading Research Center Support Project. Totally 8 proposals, composed of 3 proposals for MRC and 5 proposals for SRC, were finally selected this year.

Team “YUSAE”, Self-Automobile Club of Mechanical Engineering Students, Gains Recognition of Electric Car Manufacture 4-Time Winner of ‘Baja SAE Korea’ Racing and Won Various International Self-Automobile Racing Competitions Club Alumni Got Jobs at Car Manufacturer like Hyundai [2015-6-9] <Team YUSAE and Advisor Hwang Pyung> Yeungnam University (President NOH, Seok-Kyun) won the bronze medal in 2015 International Student Green Car Competition. Team “YUSAE”, Self-Automobile Club of Mechanical Engineering Students won the bronze medal in this competition held at the Transportation Safety Research Institute in Hwasung City, Gyonggido province, during two days from May 29. This competition was 6th round this year and has been held under the auspices of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. A total of 67 teams from 40 international universities participated in this competition. They competed their car performance by racing their self-manufactured cars. Racing is divided into electric car division and hybrid car division. According to the total evaluation score in terms of the performance of car itself such as accelerating ability, steering & safe breaking and racing and the driving ability, Team YUSAE gained higher score at steering & safe breaking performance and finished the race successfully. The Team achieved a recognition again of its manufacturing ability of high performance electric car. Mr. Seong Seongmo (26, senior of mechanical engineering), the Chief of Team YUSAE, says, “Our car was very excellent in terms of car performance, but there was a little mistake in the 2nd test of steering and safe breaking. Unfortunately, this caused a bronze medal. I wish my juniors will do not lose a gold medal next year.” YU’s YUSAE Team has 24 year-long history and has won a victory trophy four times in ‘Baja SAE Korea’, an intercollegiate design competition of small off-road car: three-time winner for the third straight year from 2004 to 2006 and the winner of 2014. In addition, YUSAE was the bronze medalist in 2013 KSAE Baja and the silver medalist in KSAE Formula. Like this, YUSAE has achieved its international recognition of ability by winning many kinds of competitions at home and abroad. Their ability has been connected to their member’s employment after graduation. Two alumni of YUSAE joined Hyundai Motor company, and the present team chief Mr. Seong Seongmo has experienced internship at Hyundai Motor and was appointed to join the same company after his graduation due next February. According to the advisor professor of YUSAE Hwang Pyung, “Students are breeding up practical on-the-job competence by themselves through YUSAE. So I am very proud of YUSAE members, in that they have developed their academic competence by themselves through various activities in clubs or in study groups, and won the prizes in competitions, and also got their jobs in that direction.”

New Efficient Technology of Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cell(QDSSC) as Highlighted Future Energy Source High Performance, High-Durability and Low Price Catalyst Evidently Increases Solar Cell Performance Published on the newest issue of <Scientific Reports>, one of world-top journals [2015-6-8] <Prof. An of chemical engineering department explains his research result.> Professor An(40)’s chemical engineering team developed a new efficient technology of energy generation in low price using Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cell (‘GDSSC’), where quantum dot is an nano-semiconductor particle absorbing easily the light. Prof. An’s team has jointly collaborated with Prof. Seong Youngeun(51)’s team in Seoul National University and Dr. Go Minjae (44)’s team in KIST for this research. This research has a scientific significance in that solar energy could be used more efficiently. The QDSSC is one of solar cells which have been actively studied to use as a next generation energy source since it was firstly reported in 1998. In order to increase the efficiency of QDSSC, it needs a technology enabling to absorb the sun light efficiently and generate much more electrons. There was one of technological difficulties how quickly the electron arrived at the catalyst electrode is to reduce the electrolyte. Notwithstanding its importance, there has been little progress in the research of alternative catalyst electrode. Instead of the previously used catalysts of platinum, gold and copper sulfide, the research team developed newly nickel nitride catalyst electrode which shows high durability, higer performance and low price, and successfully increased the performance of QDSSC. The research team has paid a special attention to that nitride-based chemical compound shows very excellent durability, and synthesized a nickel-based nitride (the so-called nickel nitride) showing a catalytic characteristic. This research finally proved that the nickel nitride catalyst has much more excellent performance and durability than the previous catalysts. Professor An, as the correspondence author in this research, mentions hopefully, “The supply of renewable energy including solar cell area is still very low over the world. In order to use the sun as a sustainable source of energy, what is more important is the technology with price competitiveness. We hopefully expect this research will make earlier the commercialization of QDSSC.” This research result was published on the newest (May 21) online version of <Scientific Reports> with the title of “Development of Alternative Catalyst Electrode for Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cell using Nickel Nitride.” Scientific Reports is an integrated world-class science journal covering the whole scientific areas of physics, chemistry and biology, and hits the top 7.3% in the similar science fields with a high impact factor of 5.078. It has been issued by the Nature Publishing Group, famous for the weekly science journal Nature. Professor An expresses his wishes, “I specialize in the research areas of development of photoelectrochemical energy material using nano-structured substances, development of new generation solar cell material, photoelcectrochemical water-dissociated cell for hydrogen generation, development of electrochemical catalyst. I will continue the convergence research in my field jointly with Seoul National University and KIST. ‘2015 Leiden Ranking’ Citation Frequency in Top 10% Studies, Fifth in Asia Only Korean university to be in the world’s top 100 18th place overall in Korea proving its excellent research capacities Assessment on research performance and quality while excluding qualitative elements such as university reputation, etc [June 4, 2015] YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) was placed 41st in the world in the math and computer sectors in the ‘2015 Leiden Ranking’ that assesses the qualitative level of theses. YU was the only Korean university to be placed in the top 100 of the rankings. ’Leiden Ranking’ is a ranking based on citations of theses that exclude subjective qualitative assessment elements such as college reputation by the Leiden University Center for Science and Technology Studies of the Netherlands, and it is an important index to estimate the research performance and quality of college professors. Theses for the past four years were analyzed using the DB of Thomson Reuters, an academic information service company, and announced since 2011. Until 2013, the rankings of the top 500 universities were announced, but from last year, it has expanded to 750. This year’s ‘Leiden Ranking’ was announced focusing on the rate of the top 10% theses cited the most in the world among universities that published 1,000 or more international papers for four years from 2010 to 2013. It also announced the top 1% and top 50% theses citation rates for the first time this year as well. The Leiden Ranking is published in a total of six fields such as overall ranking, social science, natural science and engineering, medicine, math and computer, and bio and earth science. YU became the only university in Korea to be ranked in the top 100 in all areas in the top 10% cited theses ratio in the math and computer sector being placed 41st in the world, 5th in Asia and first in Korea. YU took 40th place in the world in the 2012 match sector in the British QS world college evaluation, thus being continuously recognized for its research power from global university evaluation institutes. In addition, YU was recorded as 18th place in the top 10% and 19th in the top 1% citation frequency in the domestic university ranking for the overall sector, and also took 6th place (top 10% citation frequency) in the bio and earth science sectors begin officially recognized for its qualitative excellence in research.

Automobile specialized lighting sector selected for 2 projects in the renewable energy sector worth 9.8 billion won over five years Establish foothold to foster next-generation key technology experts Expected to have ripple effect for development of regional industry development and related industries [May 27, 2015] <YU LED-IT Center> YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) procured national funding of 9.8 billion won over the next five years by winning large-scale national projects to foster key technology experts of the future. YU was recently selected as the host institute of the ‘automobile lighting LED-IT expert fostering project’ (project supervisor, Professor of Electronic Engineering Lee Chan-soo), which is overseen by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology to receive a total of 6.5 billion won for five years until February 2020. This project, which will be pursued with the support of the central and local governments, as well as the private sector, was established to foster master’s and PhD level experts in the transport specialized lighting field. YU won this research project by being recognized for the excellent education and research infrastructure possessed by the university such as the excellent faculty and convergence education course plans related to automobile LED lighting technologies, and strengths in industry-academic cooperation with local automobile lighting companies. Accordingly, YU is planning to pursue the project focusing on fostering hands-on experts in relevant fields such as operating an automobile lighting specialized curriculum and education course, corporate-customized design education, establishment of relevant departments and specialized graduate schools, conducting company demand-based industry-academic cooperative projects, field work at specialized automobile lighting companies, and providing college-company employment programs. In addition, YU was also selected for the ‘renewable energy power and heat production / storage hybrid system human resources fostering project’ (project supervisor Professor of Chemical Engineering Jung Jae-hak). By being selected for this project sponsored by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, YU will receive funding for research worth 3.3 billion won such as private and public funding and investment in kinds for the next five years. YU’s policy is to foster experts with a wide scope of engineering knowledge on the production and storage convergence technologies of renewable energy power and heat sources through this project. Accordingly, YU is planning to construct a customized education track and to foster personnel customized to the convergence industry through industry-academic cooperation. Thus, by being selected for national research projects, YU is expected to take a preemptive step in fostering specialists who will lead the next-generation core technologies, which will be the growth engine for the future. Moreover, in addition to the engineering track, as of March 2015, YU was also selected for a total of 137 research projects funded by the central government and outside sectors in various fields including the humanities and social studies tracks, proving its recognition for the research capacities of its colleges and professors.

Faculty and students roll up their sleeves to help victims of the Nepal earthquake Donation drives all around the campus and joined by international students as well Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul students hold charity bazaar 22 million won in donations handed over to the Ambassador of Nepal [May 19, 2015] “YU is rooting for you, Nepal. Keep your head up!” Charity activities to help victims of the earthquake in Nepal were held all around the YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) campus. Faculty donated parts of their wages to help victims of the Nepal earthquake and gathered 15 million won. Also, the student body (Chairperson Kim Soo-hyun) also held charity drives all around campus from the 8th to the 13th. Choi Min-seok (YU Graduate School of Business Administration, 1st semester), who donated money he saved up to use for his next tuition, said, “After hearing about the earthquake in Nepal, I felt so bad and wanted to help in any way I could. The student body said that they were holding charity drives so I did not hesitate to make the donation.” He added, “I want to ask more people to participate in the donations so that could we help the people of Nepal.” Meanwhile, international students studying at YU also participated to help the people of Nepal. The Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul also held a charity bazaar on the 6th. These students sold their goods such as clothes and bags to other students and donated all proceeds to victims of the earthquake. <International Students of the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul held a bazaar to gather donations for victims of the Nepal earthquake.> International students and professors from Nepal studying at YU also held charity drives on campus to help victims of the earthquake in their country. 36 people including professors and international students from Nepal such as Anup Shrestha (27, 3rd term in master’s degree course in pharmacology), a graduate school student at YU, made donation boxes and stood in front of the YU Central Library in the morning of the 1st. As the vice-chair of the ‘Korea Nepal Student Association’ and the chairperson of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk chapter, Shrestha said, “After hearing news about the earthquake in my home country, I was very sad as a student from Nepal.” She added, “Since it is difficult to help directly as I am studying in Korea, I decided to participate in this charity drive. I hope that the Korean people will show a lot of interest in the earthquake victims of Nepal.” In addition to the international students from Nepal, the YU International Student Support Team faculty also helped with the students’ charity drive. In particular, five of the 31 students from Nepal at YU who participated in the charity drive were from Katmandu, the capital of Nepal. One of the students lost his grandfather to the earthquake, but overcame his sorrows and actively took part in the charity activities. In addition the street charity activities, the Nepalese international students are planning to conduct online donation activities through various SNS such as Facebook and Twitter, while also continuously gathering relief goods and sending them to Nepal to help with restorations and the victims. YU handed over donations of 22 million won gathered by faculty and students to the embassy of Nepal in Korea on the 15th.

Coming of Age Ceremony for 43rd ‘Coming of Age Day’ [May 18, 2015] <Traditional coming of age experience ceremony for the 43rd Coming of Age Day> “As crowns were worn three times on a good day of a good year, brothers will love together in virtue and they shall receive the great blessings of the heavens with longevity (以歲之正 以月之令 咸加爾服 兄弟俱在 以成厥德 黃耈無疆 受天之慶)” At the Gugye Seowon of the YU Gyeongsan Campus at 10 a.m. on the 18th, during the ‘Gwannye’(冠禮), the first part of the ‘gwanhonsangje’ ritual, YU President Noh Seok-kyun, who was invited as the guest of honor, recited a message of congratulations to male students who became 20 years old this year. Following the chipo-geon and yu-geon, the students wore the gat, which is the third crown, and tied the strings to officially announce that they had entered adulthood. YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) held the ‘traditional coming of age’ experience ceremony in light of the 43rd ‘coming of age day’. This is a national memorial day designated as the third Monday of May and it is a day to congratulate youths who became 20 years old for reaching physical and mental maturity coming out of puberty and naturally reminding them of their responsibilities and duties as adults. This traditional coming of age ceremony that was even more significant as being the 68th anniversary of the school, a total of eight students including six international students from Tanzania, Jamaica, Malaya, Uzbekistan and China all wore traditional clothes and took part in the ‘gwannye’ for men and ‘gyerye’ for women. Kakono David Mabula (29) from Tanzania who enrolled at the YU Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul this year said, “Unlike the coming of age ceremony of Tanzania, I was impressed with the really solemn atmosphere and procedures.” He added, “It was a fun experience as a foreign student. I was able to experience the charms of traditional Korean culture that teaches the pride and responsibilities of being an adult.” Gwannye is a ceremony of placing three hats on a man who became the age of 20 that emphasizes his responsibilities to his family, society and country. This ritual is completed by raising the hair in a topknot and wearing three crows. It is divided into the bunni ritual of changing clothes and taking a sip of alcohol to declare to the heavens that one has become an adult called chorye, and the myeongjarye ritual of giving a nickname called ‘ja’ as a representation to keep the body and name given to the new adult from his ancestors. Gyerye is a ritual where a woman undos her pigtails and raises here in a jjok (chignon) and uses a binyeo (hairpin) to officially declare that she is an adult woman. YU President Noh Seok-kyun, who watched the entire traditional coming of age ceremony that lasted for about one and a half hours said, “We must protect and preserve the traditional coming of age ceremony, which is a ritual that is not just a passage ritual, but a ritual of learning and realizing the spirit of filial piety and the pride and responsibility of being an adult.” He added, “I hope that the students who have met their coming of age this year will become the force behind of Korea who respect theirselves, love others, and fulfill their social responsibilities.

7th general meeting of the US Alumni Association held in LA from 9th to 11th Donation of 10,000 dollars for development fund of YU and alumni association, and 6,000 dollar scholarship for junior students studying in the US Luncheon held with over 30 students participating in overseas intern program 8th general meeting scheduled to be held in 2017 in Atlanta [2015-5-13] The alumni power of YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) shined bright in the United States as well. The YU US Alumni Association (Chairman Kim Byeong-tak, Economics class of ‘66) held its 7th general meeting at the Oxford Palace Hotel in Los Angeles, California from May 9 to 11. In addition to the 130 alumni throughout the United States, 30 YU students working as interns in LA also attended this meeting. At the general meeting, YU President Noh Seok-kyun and National Assemblyman Lee Wan-young, who was from the Department of Public Administration class of ‘76 also attended. At this meeting, the US Alumni Association donated 10,000 dollars for the school and alumni association development fund, while also giving a total of 6,000 dollars in scholarships to three juniors currently studying in the United States. At the scholarship ceremony held on the 9th, Lee Seung-yeob (36) who graduated from YU majoring in Architectural Engineering in February 2003 and is currently working on his PhD (major in architecture, landscaping and culture) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Jang Hye-in (3) who graduated from the YU Department of Biotechnology in February 2008 and is currently working on her PhD (major in molecular and cellular biochemistry) at the University of Kentucky, and Kim Ye-reum (27) who graduated from the YU School of Music in February 2011 and is currently enrolled in a master’s degree program (major in piano) at the Cleveland Institute of Music received 2,000 dollars in scholarships each. <Former chairmen of the YU US Alumni Association and YU President Noh Seok-kyun> At the general meeting, Lee Il-geon (64), who graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering in the class of ‘69 and served as the head of the steering committee for this meeting, was appointed as the 7th chairman of the association. Mr. Lee said, “The US Alumni Association will continuously increase overseas internship programs and scholarships so that our juniors at YU can gain rich experiences in a broader world,” and added, “I hope that YU alumni will be active not only in the United States but throughout the world.” Meanwhile, during the general meeting period, President Noh Seok-kyun invited 30 YU students participating in internship programs in LA and held a luncheon at a Korean restaurant in downtown LA. Mr. Noh and the students were able to freely talk about the overseas internship program and their life abroad. <President Noh Seok-kyun held a luncheon with YU students currently participating in internship programs in the United States.> YU President Noh Seok-kyun said, “By broadening your horizons through the overseas internship program and overcoming your limitations one at a time, you will have the ability to overcome difficulties even after graduating and going into the real world,” and added, “I hope that you will do your best until the end of your internship and make this an opportunity to upgrade your capacities.” Jeon Min-gyeong (21, senior in international commerce) who is doing her internship at Forever 21, an American fashion company, said, “In addition to practical knowledge for the office, I was also able to improve my foreign language skills so I am happy that I participated in this internship program.” She added, “There are some difficulties living here in the United States as a student, but the surprise visit by the president of YU and his words of encouragement really helped me.” The YU US Alumni Association held their founding meeting in LA in October 2002, and there are a total of 10 regional alumni associations in the United States including in Chicago, New York and Washington. The 8th general meeting in 2017 will be held in Atlanta, and former University of Georgia Professor Jeon Heung-won (75) from the YU Department of Pharmacy class of ‘58 is scheduled to take charge as the head of the steering committee.
